Vietnam has the first doctor in ca tru

VietNamNet Bridge - Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dien, Vice Director of the
Han-Nom Library (the Han-Nom Research Institute), has been conferred with
the first doctorate degree in ca tru, a type of popular Vietnamese folk
music.

In a dissertation titled The Roles of Han-Nom Materials in the
Research of Ca Tru, Mr. Dieu investigates 49 books and 70 tombstones
of the Han-Nom languages about ca tru, as well as other materials at
ca tru villages. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dien is the first person to publish
the full version of a ca tru song titled "Non mai" and 9 types of ca
tru sung during ca tru originators worshipping ceremonies.
He also found the earliest evidence of ca tru, which is a song
written by Le Duc Mao before 1505, which leads to the conclusion that ca tru
existed in Vietnamese villages as early as the 15th century. In
addition, Mr. Dieu listed 99 different ways of singing ca tru for
different settings such as worshipping ceremonies and contests, as
well as provided exhaustive details on the castanets and prosody of
ca tru.
